Your Itinerary 17: Photographing Antarctica

Local Expert: Visiting and Photographing Antarctica

Gary Arndt AntarcticaOur local expert this week is Gary Arndt from everything-everywhere.com and This Week in Travel. Gary has been a full-time traveler since 2007. He could give a Local Expert interview about a lot of places around the globe. Photographing Antarctica obviously left a big impression on Gary. It is the first place he though of when I asked him to be part of our Local Expert series.

Photographing Antarctica is probably on a lot of our “bucket lists”. The remote location makes it more difficult to visit than your average spot. Traveling to the southern tip of South America and catching a boat can certainly be an intimidating prospect!

Gary shares some interesting tips for getting on a ship and saving some money while you're at it. You might have to show up in Ushuaia without a reservation to save some bucks, so it's not for the faint of heart!

Images from Antarctica conjure up dreams of adventure on the sea and ice. Whether you want to shoot landscapes, wildlife or even decaying industrial sites, a voyage to Antarctica has a lot to offer the adventurous photographer.

You can find Gary on Instagram @everythingeverywhere and download his eBook of Antarctica photos. Check out the links below, and stay tuned for more Local Experts on Your Itinerary.

  1. We had a great presentation a couple of months ago at our local camera club in Cambridge, UK from Prof. Lloyd Peck, who works at the British Antarctic Survey and regularly visits the Antarctic peninsula. He’s a wonderful lecturer, but I’m sure he’d be the first to say he wasn’t a stellar photographer. So, he should get together with Gary for him to illustrate his talks in a winning double-act!
