Street Focus 33: Q&A and Street Challenge
Today, my guest co-host for this new Q&A episode is street photographer Spyros Papaspyropoulos. He was our guide for the Streets of the World Athens special on episode 24 and he is one of the guys behind StreetHunters.net.
Together we answer questions from Piä Gùptä about what we think is the best lens for street photography and why. Another question by Streettogstore about what do we look first, the story or the light. And finally a question sent by Steve Brokaw regarding flash street photography. Check out the flash street photography experiment video we mentioned on the show.

I always take my camera with me and, because there is a lot of time to kill, I walk around to find interesting subjects (and there are many). Sometimes it's all about color, enter your best shot and let us know why you think it's a stronger image in color than it would have been in B&W.

Number 6. This image is definitely a colour image. Her top matched the wall perfectly. She was absorbed in her phone so managed to get 2 images. This is the second. I liked the angle also.

I’m about to go on a long period of travel, so I’m going to get my entry in early.
This was grabbed in London’s arty Covent Garden district on my Panasonic GM1. I like the way the low sun catches the curved and angled orange, yellow and blue elements at the front and sets them against the red graphics on on the building. It isn’t nearly as strong in B&W.
This photo is taken in Lyon, in the street very close to the Confluence. Removing the colors this photo wouldn’t be what it is.

Some cameras offer a function I would never use. It is a “creative mode” which allows to isolate and use one single color while the rest of the picture is B&W. However I love it when the landscape or the street offer such a color accent naturally. Galata Bridge Istanbul, Fujifilm X100s
I shot this photo through the reflections from a commercial sign. Luckily a runner passed by and allowed me to capture this interesting composition.
Burgers doesn´t look tasty at all in black and white 🙂

I’m a photographer from Bahrain, a small island in the meddle east. I took this shot while I was in a photowalk in an old ally at the city of Muharraq. It’s the second island in terms of size in my country. It’s known for its old and traditional houses and neighborhoods.
I noticed this very small barber shop, it can barely serve two persons at the same time. And this is what I tried to show in this shot. I was standing exactly at the door, trying to compose a shot using my 35mm lenses (50mm equivalent) on my Nikon D300s camera.
every year Sarasota,florida has a rennissance fair. I loved the red in this picture. I lalso liked how the material is partially covering her face for a bit of added mystery
I shot this yesterday while on a photwalk in Barcelona. We were in Las Ramblas, one of the most famous (touristy) streets in Barcelona. Something is always happening there and you can never be short of material. I saw the girl on the bicycle late so I was too late to give her more space in front. However, it’s better getting the shot with some reserves than not getting it.
I shot this at Portobello Market, London. I loved the color in the background with the contrast of the lady in front taking a rest. The birds also seem to be saying “enjoy yourself” to her.
This was shot in Ogden, Ut. I have never noticed this bar before but fell in love with the sign.
A festive home I walked past in Hermosa Beach California with a pinwheel blowing in the wind of the front yard. The image gave me a sense of the pinwheel splashing color over the home.
Number 06…This time for sure.. Girls on their iPhones its like shooting fish in a barrel… However I really liked the colours echoed in her clothes. A colour shot for sure.
Because medium format positive color film is amazing!
New Orleans LA is a very colorful city especially at the French Quarters. I shot this one with my Fuji X-T1.
I think my photo ‘Distracted Driving’ works best in colour because the yellow and orange streaks denote speed and danger!

Heel – I shoot mostly black and white but these colors were so vibrant I had to go color.

Shot in NYC while attending Eric Kim’s Street photography workshop, hope to attend 1 of Valerie’s before too long.
I work at SFO so the airport is my street. I spotted a group of monks in the International Terminal admiring some of our art displays. Leica CL, 40mm Summicron, Fujifilm 200.
Ran across this little sandwich shop while a friend and I were wandering around the medina in Rabat, Morocco last month. I just loved the pink doors and the paintings of sandwiches and tagine on them.
On their way to Freedom Day celebrations in Pretoria. Taken with a Fujifilm X-A1 with 55-230 zoom.
I call this Samurai hot dog eater. Taken Easter Sunday near the Fifth Avenue Parade. I definitely think the color red was vital.

Here is my submission. The thing the girl was in was already in black & white anyway and I felt that colors would draw the eye in towards the scene. Especially with the black & white of the wheel contrasting them. “A Mother’s Joy”

At Fiesta Hermosa I told this man I thought his colorful outfit was awesome and I would like to take a picture. He gave me permission and right before the picture he pulled out an even more colorful yellow jacket to match his hat.
Carnivals to me just overwhelm you with bright and flashing colors and are so much a part of walking through a midway.
This monk seemed to be in the “zone” with his Casio when I captured this on a Pentax K10d with an old Soligor 135mm prime. Even on the Damrak, (one of the busiest streets in Amsterdam) the saffron robe really stood out. Groetjes, Ken
