In the visual arts, composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, as distinct from the subject. The term composition means ‘putting together' and can apply to any work of art, from music to writing to photography, that is arranged using conscious thought.

  1. Composition is about arranging the elements of a scene in such a way as to be pleasing or engaging to the viewer. So-called “rules” are suggestions or strategies that have been discovered over the centuries to short circuit the search for this goal. “Rule” is just easier to say than suggestion or strategy.
