In this interview Varina and Jay Patel join me to talk about their collaborative project with Shimoda Designs. Varina had the idea that considering women have “slightly” different anatomies than men, camera bags could easily be made comfier for the other half of the population. Working with Shimoda Designs they came up with something special! This interview is about how that idea went from epiphany to production.

It took me 3.5 hours to get to campground carrying 45 lbs backpack. It was snowing/hailing when we left the car and rained on and off all weekend long. The morning I took the photos, the mountains surrounding the canyons were covered with snow. The average highs were in the 50s and lows in the 30s. I fell in the river couple of times while crossing it and got cold and wet (and there were no fire allowed). And given another chance…I would do this over again in even worse conditions.

About Varina Patel, in her own words…

There is nothing more remarkable to me than the power of nature. It is both cataclysmic and subtle. Slow and continuous erosion by water and wind can create landscapes every bit as astonishing as those shaped by catastrophic events – and minuscule details can be as breathtaking as grand vistas that stretch from one horizon to the other. Nature is incredibly diverse.

Burning desert sands and mossy riverbanks… Brilliant sunbeams and fading alpenglow… Silent snowfall and raging summer storms… Each offers a unique opportunity. I am irresistibly drawn to the challenge of finding my next photograph and mastering the skills required to capture it effectively.

About Jay Patel, in his own words…

Patience is a virtue unless you are chasing your dreams I could start off like this – “Seeds of Jay Patel’s appreciation for beautiful places were planted early in his childhood….” but it would get boring really fast.

I will just sum it up and say that I am a Landscape and Wilderness Photographer who loves to capture dramatic light. My photographs have been published in various magazines, calendars, and advertising materials throughout the world.
