TheFIX 066: Defining Your Photographic Style with Brian Matiash

Defining Your Photographic Style with Brian Matiash

In this episode of TheFIX, photographer, author and photo educator Brian Matiash joins host Seán Duggan for a wide-ranging conversation about defining your photographic style, improving your craft, and creating a meaningful place for photography in your life. One lucky viewer or listener will be able to win a copy of Brian’s book The Visual Palette: Defining Your Photographic Style (published by Rocky Nook). We also talk about Brian’s latest “living on the edge” venture, his live Facebook show, “The Photo Show” (don’t worry, it’s also recorded so you can watch it later if you’re not around during the live broadcast). Along the way we also share a few of our favorite photography quotes, talk about Lightroom keyword strategy, and generally enjoy where the conversation takes us. And we hope that you you’ll enjoy it, too!

  • I just discovered this video series and was inspired by your discussion. I would love a copy of the Visual Palette. I am discovering my photographic style by finding photographers that inspire me. Your discussion about using key terms will help me to find trends in my own photography.

  • Thanks for watching the show, Chad, and thanks for your comment! Identifying a photographic style can take some time. Exploration, learning, continuing to make new images, and being inspired by other photographers are excellent ways to move towards finding your own voice in photography.

  • Hi Sean,
I started the 365 project over in twip family and migrated over here, Great shows by the way. I have been inspired by brian’s (and nicoles) work for a fair while over in OnOne Inspirations.I definitely like the way he sees the richness of the natural world and would love a copy of his new book. My current focus, which is rapidly becoming a passion, is I want to bring a lot of classic artist tools and secret knowledge related to seeing shadows, form, composition, texture and colour in the photographers world, both before (in the view finder and even before you lift the camera) and after (in post processing).

  • Hi Norm…thanks very much for the feedback on the show. I am glad you are enjoying it! I love the idea of your new passion regarding classic art tools and knowledge. Sounds like a creative thread well worth following!

  • Congratulations Chad…you are the winner of Brian’s book “The Visual Palette”! Since there were only two entries this week I used the very scientific method of flipping a coin to determine the winner. Please us the Contact Us link at the top of the page, chose TheFIX from the list of TWIP programs, and send me your email address and shipping address so I can have Rocky Nook send you the book. And, as always, thanks very much for tuning in to TheFIX!.

  • I replied to the link but I never heard back. I wanted to make sure my information went through. Thanks
